How to Make Your Spray Tan Look Natural (Not Fake)

How to make a spray tan look natural: start a level lighter than you think, match the depth to your own tone, and keep your skin hydrated as it fades.

How to Make Your Spray Tan Look Natural (Not Fake)

To make a spray tan look natural, start one intensity level lighter than you think you want, match the depth to the tone you already have, and keep your skin hydrated so the colour fades evenly instead of patchily. The best spray tan is the one nobody notices. If people ask whether you went somewhere warm rather than where you got your tan, you have it right.

Why Do Spray Tans Look Fake?

Three things give a tan away, and all of them are avoidable. The first is depth: colour several shades past your natural tone reads as applied rather than earned. The second is texture, because dry or flaky skin grabs colour unevenly and no depth setting fixes a poor canvas. The third is the fade, since a tan that lifts in blotches looks far more obvious than one that lifts gradually. Depth is a choice you make in the booth. The other two are prep and aftercare.

Should You Start Light or Go Dark?

Start light. Our booth offers Malibu and Clear in four intensity levels, from light to double dark, and the most common mistake is jumping to the deepest one on a first visit. Go a level lighter than feels right, see how it develops on your skin, and step up next time if you want more. A soft glow built over two or three sessions always reads better than one deep tan applied all at once, and you cannot undo a shade that has already developed.

How Do You Match the Depth to Your Skin Tone?

Work with the tone you have rather than against it. If you burn easily and rarely tan in the sun, light or medium is the believable range for you, because a deep tan on very fair skin is the single most recognisable giveaway. Our guide on spray tanning for fair skin goes into this in more detail. If you tan easily in the sun, you have more room and can go deeper without it looking out of place. On deeper skin tones the goal shifts from adding colour to adding richness and evenness, which we cover in spray tans for dark skin tones.

Does Clear or Malibu Look More Natural?

Clear tends to fade the most softly, especially on lighter skin, because it carries no cosmetic bronzer. There is no instant tint, so the colour simply appears over the development window and nobody sees the before-and-after moment. Malibu gives you an immediate guide colour, which is useful if you want to see coverage right away or you are tanning for an event in the next day or two. Neither is more natural once developed. They differ in how visible the process is, not in the result.

Should You Include Your Face?

Yes, in most cases. Tanning your body and skipping your face leaves a visible line at the jaw and neck, which is exactly the kind of detail that makes a tan obvious. The booth covers your face along with the rest of you, and the transition stays seamless. If your facial skin is reactive or you are already minimising what goes on it, going a level lighter overall is a better compromise than leaving your face out entirely.

Why Does Moisturizing Make a Tan Look More Natural?

Because colour sits in your outermost skin cells, and dry skin sheds those cells unevenly. Hydrated skin holds colour smoothly and lifts it gradually, which is the whole difference between a tan that softens and one that goes blotchy. Moisturize twice a day with a fragrance-free, oil-free lotion from your first rinse onward, and pay extra attention to elbows, knees, wrists and ankles where skin is thickest. Exfoliating properly beforehand matters just as much, and our guide on how to exfoliate before a spray tan covers the timing.

What If It Already Looks Too Dark or Too Orange?

Both are fixable. Too dark usually softens noticeably within a day or two of normal showering and moisturizing. Orange is a different problem with its own causes, and we walk through them in why does my spray tan look orange. If the colour has gone uneven rather than simply deep, how to fix a patchy spray tan is the one to read.

Natural is mostly restraint. Go a level lighter than you think, prep properly, and moisturize like it is part of the treatment rather than an afterthought. See how the booth works, then book a session at TANNED TO in Toronto.
