You can swim with a spray tan. It will just fade faster. Chlorine breaks the colour down and salt water dries your skin out, so one dip costs you very little while daily laps will noticeably shorten your tan. Time your session 2 to 3 days before you swim, rinse before and after, and moisturize straight away.
Can You Swim With a Spray Tan?
Yes. Once your tan has fully developed and you have done your first rinse at the 6 to 8 hour mark, swimming will not wash it off. What it does is speed up fading. A single swim makes almost no difference. Swimming every day for a week will visibly shorten how long your colour lasts.
How Does Chlorine Affect a Spray Tan?
Chlorine is a bleaching agent, so it breaks down developed DHA colour and lightens it unevenly, which is what causes blotchy patches rather than a smooth fade. Salt water works differently but lands in the same place: it is drying, and dry skin sheds faster, taking colour with it. A chlorinated pool is usually gentler on a tan than the ocean, mostly because you spend less time in it.
When Should You Book Before a Pool Day?
Book 2 to 3 days ahead. That gives the colour time to fully develop and settle into your skin before it ever touches water. Getting a tan the morning of a pool day is the most common way people lose one, because you end up rinsing and swimming while the colour is still setting.
What to Do Before and After You Swim
Before you get in, rinse with fresh water. Skin that is already wet absorbs less chlorinated water than dry skin does, so a quick pre-swim rinse genuinely helps. Afterwards, rinse immediately with fresh water, pat dry rather than rubbing, and moisturize right away. The faster you rehydrate your skin, the less colour you lose.
Does a Spray Tan Protect You From the Sun?
No. A spray tan gives you zero UV protection. DHA colours the surface of your skin and does nothing to block ultraviolet light, so you can burn just as easily with a tan as without one. Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen whenever you are outdoors and reapply after swimming. Choose an oil-free formula, since oil-based products break down a spray tan. A spray tan and a swimming habit can coexist, you just have to plan around each other. Book 2 to 3 days ahead, rinse before and after, and moisturize like it is your job. Heading somewhere warm?
