How Long Does an Automated Spray Tan Last? Tips to Make Your Glow Last Longer

How long does a spray tan last? Most automated spray tans last up to 7 days, and up to 10+ days with proper prep and aftercare. Here are the best tips to extend your sunless tan and keep your glow looking fresh.

How Long Does an Automated Spray Tan Last? Tips to Make Your Glow Last Longer

One of the most common questions we get at TANNED TO is: “how long does a spray tan last?” On average, an automated spray tan lasts 5 to 7 days. With proper prep and aftercare, many of our clients in Toronto extend their glow to 10+ days. The exact duration depends on your skin type, how well you prep before your session, and how you care for your tan afterward.

How the Tan Develops

Here’s how the science works: the DHA (dihydroxyacetone) in your sunless tanning solution reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of your skin to produce a natural-looking bronze colour. This colour begins developing 2–3 hours after your session and continues to deepen over the next 12–24 hours. As your skin naturally exfoliates over the following week, the tan fades gradually and evenly — no patchy peeling like you get from a sun tan or tanning bed.

Moisturize Daily

The single most important aftercare step is moisturizing. Apply a gentle, oil-free moisturizer daily to keep your skin hydrated — dry, flaky skin sheds faster and takes your colour with it. Avoid harsh exfoliants, loofahs, and long hot baths, as all of these accelerate skin turnover and shorten the life of your spray tan. Shaving also removes the top layer of skin, so shave before your appointment rather than after.

Your First Shower

Your first shower after a spray tan matters more than any other. Wait at least 6–8 hours before rinsing off. When you do rinse off, use lukewarm water and let the water run clear. Do not use any body wash or cleansers. You’ll notice cosmetic bronzer rinsing off in the water, and that is completely normal. The actual DHA tan has already bonded with your skin underneath and will continue to darken for up to 24 hours after your session.

More Tips to Extend Your Glow

A few more tips to extend your glow: wear loose, dark clothing after your session to avoid friction that can rub off the solution before it sets. Avoid chlorinated pools and hot tubs for at least 24 hours, as chlorine can bleach the colour from your skin. If you notice any uneven spots, check out our guide on how to fix a patchy spray tan. For those who want a year-round bronze, we recommend rebooking every 5–7 days. Our membership plans at TANNED TO make it easy and affordable to maintain a consistent, healthy-looking glow without any UV exposure.
