Spray Tans for Men: Everything You Need to Know (First-Timer’s Guide)

Thinking about getting a spray tan but not sure what to expect? Here’s the no-BS guide for men — what it looks like, what to wear, and why more guys in Toronto are doing it.

Spray Tans for Men: Everything You Need to Know (First-Timer’s Guide)

More men are getting spray tans than ever — athletes, grooms, professionals, and guys who just want to look healthier without baking in the sun. But if you’ve never had one, it’s normal to have questions. Here’s everything you need to know about getting a spray tan as a guy, from start to finish.

Will It Look Natural?

This is the number one concern — and the answer is yes, as long as you pick the right shade. The key is to stay within 1–2 shades of your natural skin tone. At TANNED TO, our booth offers four intensity levels from light to double dark, so you have full control. If you’re unsure, start with a lighter level on your first visit. You can always go darker next time. The result is an even, healthy-looking glow — not orange, not streaky, just a natural bronze.

What Do I Wear During the Tan?

We recommend wearing dark underwear or shorts during your session. The booth is completely private — no technician, no one else in the room. Just you. Whatever you wear will leave a tan line, so wear as little as you’re comfortable with. Most guys go with fitted dark briefs or boxer briefs.

How to Prep

Exfoliate your body 24 hours before your session using an exfoliating mitt — focus on elbows, knees, and ankles. If you plan to shave (face or body), do it at least 24 hours before so your pores have time to close. On the day of your tan, skip deodorant, cologne, and moisturizer. Deodorant in particular can react with the tanning solution and turn green on your skin.

What Happens During the Session

You’ll check in, head to your private room, apply the barrier cream provided to your hands and nails, put on a hair net, and step into the booth. The touchscreen lets you choose your solution type (Malibu for an instant visible tan or Clear for a gradual develop), your intensity level, and an optional complimentary Hydrate or Lift skincare treatment. Hit start, follow the voice-guided instructions through four simple stances, and you’re done in about 4 minutes. Warm air dries you between each pass so you don’t feel wet.

After Your Tan

Wear loose, dark clothing after your session. Wait 6–8 hours before rinsing off — use lukewarm water only, no body wash or soap. You’ll see the cosmetic bronzer rinse off but the actual DHA tan has already bonded with your skin underneath. Your tan will continue to develop over the next 12–24 hours and last up to 7 days, or up to 10+ days with proper aftercare. Moisturize daily to extend your glow. Read our full prep and aftercare guide for more detail.

Is It Awkward?

Not at all. That’s the whole point of an automated booth — there’s no technician spraying you, no small talk, no one seeing you undressed. You walk in, the machine does the work, and you walk out. It’s the same level of privacy as using a shower. And if it’s your first time, we’ll help you through it.

Who Gets Spray Tans?

More guys than you think. Grooms before their wedding, athletes who want muscle definition for competitions or content, professionals who want to look healthier on camera, and everyday guys who just want a confidence boost without UV damage. There’s no stigma — it’s skincare. Book your first session and see for yourself.
